    Walmart Layaway Program

I always use the Walmart/Kmart layaway programs around Christmas. Now that we've filed chapter 13, and money will be tight for the next 5 years, am I still allowed to use layaway? I know it's nothing like getting a new credit card, or line of credit, but it is a "contract agreement".

Have any of you had experience with this?

    Thank you!

You are not prohibited from entering into contracts while in Chap 13. You are prohibited from incurring debt. I don't think putting something on layaway is incurring debt. It is putting cash down in advance so that the store will agreeing to hold something for you until you can pay in full. Check with your attorney to be sure.

Instead of using layaway, why not start saving now?

Filed Chap 13 April 2010. Discharged May 2015.
$143,000 in debt discharged for $36,500, including attorneys fees. Money well spent!
