    Awaiting Tropical Storm Barry

Ah, one day into hurricane season, and exactly one storm out there.

Tropical Storm Barry is expected to make landfall very close to where we live, tomorrow.

I don't expect it to be more than a minor inconvenience, so no prayers or thoughts really needed (if anyone was even considering such a thing for us simple country folk).

Should be no more than some small power outages. I say this, and the lights flicker a bit. They did go out a few minutes ago for about 15 seconds.

Maybe some trees down and no electricity-for MOST people.

Two years ago I bought a 40kw generator (on a credit card, no less ) which will my power my house entirely. In fact it could probably power several, but I digress.

I wanted to say a great big thanks to XXXXXXXXX Credit Card company for keeping me and my family in cool, air conditioned comfort this hurricane season.

smarmy and way too self-satisfied best wishes,

    -dmc

Sure hope Barry turns out to be as benign as you expect, DMC. Please let us know after the big storm passes that you and family are safe.

Well, the dang thing is going to land right on our chin, it looks like, on the latest forecasts. This is still nothing much to worry about though, with minor winds and no real danger, as long as it does not strengthen. It is not expected to.

I am looking forward to this as a "test" for our generator, and actually hope to lose power. I work at home, so a few hours or a day or two without power would be a good chance to see how well we planned for this.

Other than power outages we don't expect anything. But, as always, if you look at the weather radar, it looks a lot worse than it is.

A few years ago, during those record numbers of hurricanes, I recall sitting at the edge of my pool in utter calm. The TV radar looked like Florida-the entire state-was going to be removed from the map forever. But it was nowhere near that bad.

Also, I recall driving by a weather forecaster from The Weather Channel who was "dramatizing" his reports a bit. He stood beside a very busy highway, near a shallow dip that filled with water. As he broadcast, cars would occasionally pass by, tossing water high in the air and onto him. The cameras couldn't see the cars, just him, so I am sure it looked like precarious conditions.

Out of sight, though, were Floridians going about normal business, ordering burgers at a drive through joint.

I guess it helped his visual though. No one would tune in for the calm conditions we had then.

Now a category 2 or higher-I would be concerned. This should be a fun storm.

      best wishes,

      -dmc

Well, I do hope you get some decent rain out of this. The alligators are getting crispy. Is the drought as bad as they say?

No damage at all as far as I can tell from news reports. The wind never even got bad. The power stayed on and I didn't get to check my generator out.

            Oh well.

The rain was beautiful, and very much needed. The storm is racing out of the state and headed up the eastern seaboard now. Enjoy the rain, and stay safe. It can still spawn some nasty weather.

            Best wishes,
