And why is it that hairdressers feel compelled to talk to the customer while they are cutting our hair? I don't know that person, I don't want that person to know anything about me. Obviously, they get distracted while talking? They could do a better job if they concentrated on what they are doing?

If I want to talk, I'll go to a shrink....or log onto the BK forum.

LOL!! I'm not much of a talker when sitting in a salon chair, and I think my regular hairdresser, the one who was out sick with the flu today, knows this so she keeps pretty quiet and only asks pertinent questions about my hair when necessary. We do our talking either before or after the cut.

I think that most hairdressers try to "break the ice" by chatting up new customers, not realizing that this may be irritating to many!

Yes. YES! Ugh!

I'm not much of a people person. I'm a techy and so I'm a loner by nature. I also can't stand it when hair dressers start trying to chat me up. I think they do it to try to get to know their customers. Great. But generally I hate sitting in their chair to begin with so I'm not really in the mood to talk.

FLBK7, Scunci makes really cute cloth headbands that can hold your hair back too. I wear them myself. And they make a good vareity of them. Who cares if you are in your 50s, have some fun with hair do-dads.

I had my hair highlighted/cut in an Aveda Salon; price $180 and I almost lost my mind. My hair at the time was just above my shoulders, so not much cutting, the highlights were barely noticeable & I was pissed.

Went back to my natural color after that & decided last month that I wanted to be blonde again. Well, I've done it before at home & got good results but I ended up looking a bit like carrot top without the curls (lots of red undertones).

Went & had it properly color corrected on Saturday & cut so that I can grow it out in the Posh cut.

It's a bit on the short side in the back but just over ears in front...do not let me home alone with scissors!...Thank god, it was corrected before tomorrow!

When I was a wee girl, like, very young.. maybe 4 or 5? I wanted bangs so badly but my mom wouldn't cut them. So! I decided to do it myself!

I had bangs alright... teeny short on one side, long on the other. But by golly I had bangs! My mom cracked up laughing when she saw me. She straightened them and I have had bangs ever since! (With the exception of the hair loss about 2 years ago. So needless to say, I sorely miss them. )

When I was around 14, I snagged a L'Oreal home color kit from my mom when she was at work that was supposed to be an auburn colour. Turned my hair reddish ... since then, I've kept it red.

This thread has got me seriously thinking about my hair now. I'm about to call and make an appointment today with a new stylist. My boyfriend likes him, so I'll give him a shot.

I can honestly say that I've never had a horrible experience with a beauty salon. - except when I was like 6 or so and my mom made me cut it when I got headlice... And.... my favorite place is Fantastic Sams. I had one "not great" experience where a girl dyed my hair and you could still see the roots, but not too terribly bad (as I don't go to color extremes much).

But - one halloween I used the "wash out" dye and made my hair black. It looked great until I washed it. The more I washed it, the greener it turned. I actually had people stop and ask me if I knew my hair was green (strangers). I went to a few salons and they all said I would have to strip my hair of all color and pick the color I wanted it to get it out. Then finally, I stopped at one and they suggested the same.... then ran to ask their boss... who SO kindly told me that she would NOT suggest doing that. Her suggestions (since my hair was still healthy... just green) was to go out and buy a red hair dye. She said my brown hair had yellow tones and the black dye had blue tones.... yellow and blue make green!. I bought two boxes at her suggestion but only ended up needing one. My hair turned back to my natural color. Voila!

I personally don't like short hair on myself. When I go to the salon I show them what I want... then ask them to make it that cut - but an inch or two longer. Then, if I still think it's too long, I'll ask for another inch or so cut off. I may seem needy, but I tip well.

Oh, and for people with wavy, curly hair..... I've been told that you should not cut wavy, curly hair when it is still wet unless it is just a simple trim.

Yes. Which is how I can tell a hair dresser is not a good hair dresser. Problem is, so far, THEY ALL cut my hair when it's wet.

So they can use the excuse that your hair shrinks a lot when it's dry to cover up for "they got scissor happy and cut it too short"

It's been a week and a half, and I'm still unhappy. Ask me how I like it in May 2008. It should be good by then.

Even with multiple pictures of the same haircut, the girl didn't get it right and I told her that one of the pictures was too short and one was too long, that I wanted it in between the two....and she cut it shorter than the one that was too short. Picture never work for me....apparently, they see the cut differently than I do. No, that's not true, it boils down to they have no restraint.

I seem to have the opposite problem of most people on here. I have the problem that the stylist will never cut my hair short enough! I have medium length hair, maybe about 10 inches long or so. It is baby fine, so breaks very easily. I hate going to the salon, don't like strangers touching my head, so usually put off going to once or twice a year at most. By the time I do give up and go to the salon, the split ends and damage is terrible, despite my efforts to deep condition it. So I tell them to cut off all the damaged parts, usually ask for 4-5 inches chopped off. They cut off maybe 1 inch. I say "no, I was wanting it shorter, could you please cut off more, another few inches?" They cut off maybe a quarter inch to half an inch, ask me if that's the length I wanted. I am freaked out by having this person touching my hair so much already that I rarely ask to make it even shorter, so at best I get 1 1/2 inches cut off, when I really wanted to get about half of it cut off, 4-5 inches. I wait 8 or 9 months, and repeat the process. But so far, no stylist, ever, has been willing to cut more than 2 inches off of my hair!!! What is up with that??? Maybe I only get ones that are previously too tramatized by all the crying episodes like you've reported here so won't cut length off of hair anymore? And the last time I went in and asked for a perm since my hair is so fine that I wanted some body to it, she wouldn't do that either!!! Suggested I get it cut in layers (umm, maybe I'm dumb, but how is cutting my thin hair into thinner layers going to make it look thicker?) and add highlights and lowlights instead. I did the color suggestion, and loved it (was way too expensive to do often but really did add some illusion of thickness and lasted forever because the roots weren't noticible the way they usually are 4 weeks later since it was multi-tonal to start with.) So my question is, why can't I ever get one of those scizzor happy stylists?

Awww! woeisme! Forgive me for laughing. And at the same time I want to ask, "Who does your hair?!? Maybe they won't chop off all of mine!"

Why don't you start the cut yourself before you go in and then tell them to even it up? I'm not suggesting that you try to do the whole cut, just cut about a 2 in wide strip to the length that you want, then they will have to cut it to match.

This is strange, I am really "into" growing my hair out it's natural salt and pepper gray-- LOL. I dyed my hair since a teenager, lightening it, fussing with it and so on. All these years everyone thought I was blond but I have brown hair. Okay, so I did an experiment and at 48, started to grow out my grey hair and strangely, I love it! It is so silvery-- as opposed to goldish. Why am I not supposed to like grey hair? Right now it is kind of "this and that," as per keeping with a person actually strapped for cash. But I really feel "honest" like a guy who is allowed to wear grey hair and is seen as "mature." I tend to think that everyone puts down vanity, but when you are not vein, they go and call you other names (messy, old etc...) You can't win, eh?

I love gray hair. Hubby has beautiful gray hair and from what I can tell, mine will be pretty, but it's so slow coming in, only a few strands here and there.

Good for you for going al natural. I bet it's gonna look great.
