One of the first things I bought after purchasing my condo is an apartment-sized chest freezer. It's the perfect size for us, and it allows me to really stock up on beef/chicken/pork when it's on sale. I'm careful about labeling and even more careful about rotating packages so that I always use the "oldest" foods first.

I even freeze bread. We like the fancy Arnold multigrain breads which used to be $3.19 a loaf as recently as last Christmas, and are now $3.49/loaf!!!!! Expensive, I know, but better for our health than white bread and much tastier too. So whenever they go on sale at $2.50 each I buy at least 8 loaves. Bread freezes beautifully.

I also cook in large quantities on weekends and freeze individual portions for future use. This has been a great timesaver on nights when I work late or when we're just too tired to cook. Just take it out of the freezer, defrost in the microwave, and then heat it up for a minute or two in the microwave as well. Much cheaper (and healthier) than ordering pizza just because you're too tired to cook!

When I was first married we did this. I don't like the taste of bread after it has been frozen. And most of the meat wasn't even used. So now I only buy what we eat and go from there.

I am not a big fan of buying stuff in bulk. I seem to waste more money doing it that way.

But if it works for you, Congrats!

Funny you mentioned that, a fellow in Lauderdale lakes was moving and Craigslisted a freezer for $75 that retailed for $440.00 at Sears, it sold within minutes. I am out for a freezer for the back but am waiting to find another deal on the list.

We are definitely genericer's here. Sam's Club, Publix Brand and Winn Dixie "Super branders". On Milk Publix is usually $4.19 for the House version, 6.19 for McArthur but CVS has McArthur for $3.99 regular and $3.49 ion sale. My wife has had stomach issues and Sam's milk causes problems, McArthur, which is 30 cents more at CVS (on my corner) does not. It may even be an issue of that's all she drank for the most part or whatever. I do know that the Sam's stuff is watery. We also use Target's Archer farms on sale and Entemmnan's folk also since it is right around the Corner from Piper where my boys go. We have cut eating out to a minimum, yesterday was our first in six weeks with the exception of a Birthday dinner courtesy of my mom. We have definitely made fiscal inroads! The kids will mostly be on their own next year, the youngest in the Marines. He has been in DEP since May and works at the recruiting Office volunteering odd jobs since that time. The oldest is in the middle of his four year degree and we are near the end of our contributions!!! The middle son is still looking but is working at WalMart for the time being, saving for his car. Likely he'll be at Nova next year, living at home but paying his own way. Trying to not encumber them with loans, the dastardly attempt to make education outlandish and bring you into compliance with the "Illuminati" through a mountain of obligation to the system (another issue).
