    Something completely different

I'm quite certain that most of you who are parents, have in the past helped out your kids in school fund raising events - selling candy, etc., WHERE YOU WORK.
Some employers allow this, others will instruct not to officially announce it but just leave bars/boxes on your desk, and then there are those employers who will even prohibit that.
The weird thing is that the employers NOT allowing any of the above are the ones who haul employees into "mandatory staff meetings" during which they push employee contributions into funds that they are propagandizing with a 15 minute video.
My son's employer is one of these outfits. My granddaughter's history class/scool is trying to raise funds for a class trip on January 20 to Washinton DC for the inauguration of the new President.

Don't suppose he has tried asking corporate if they would be willing to sponsor part of the trip?
My work officially has a no solicitation policy. But we will all bring the catalogs in and leave them laying around in the break room. There is never pressure to buy anything, and someone always does. With that said, when my son was playing sr babe ruth baseball the team went to the national competetion in Eagle Pass Texas. We were all to fundraise for the trip and it was split evenly between the players. I wrote a letter to my CEO, not really expecting much and to my surprise, the hospital gave $200, which was just fantastic.

So it never hurts to ask.

Thanks, will mention to my son to try the "corporate" route.
I feel though that the bigger issue is them not allowing these kinds of solicitations, but mandating employee meetings to listen/view propaganda videos to further their fund raising agendas.

Magyar - most places are like Arkienurses...they have a no solicitation policy but the breakroom table is full of everyone's kids' school sales brochures with a pen and order form right there. Usually there is a note to see so and so with a check for payment or they will contact you later. No one is under any obligation and no one is under obligation to do United Way or the other charities that are tauted by corporations. Usually donations are expected from the higher up executives or partners and their immediate higher level staff but most corporations know the people further down on the ladder cannot afford or even cannot consider donating out of their paycheck each payday.

Oh sure, I understand. We are pratically forced to give to United Way every year, whether we want to or not. Pledge cards are given out with our paychecks that have to have an amount filled in and signed and turned back in. You can put Zero in the amount, but it still has to be turned back in. Also, every year they have what I call a "forced donation" hamburger dinner. They run the dinner out of the cafeteria that day, and it is the only food available. So if you didn't realize today was the day, you either donate or go hungry. And to top it off, they take down your name as you go through the line. All so they can say, " oh look at us, we had 95% participation in the fundraiser this year for United Way, Gee, our employees are so caring!!!!!!!!
Don't get me wrong, I am not against united way, they do a lot of good things in my community, but my charitable giving is between me and God. Of course the KGB usually gets involved with my taxes, but they don't tell, that I know of.
