My Dad's getting a pacemaker

The new pacemaker they have now are also (I forget the term) "shockers" if the heart stops. My brother has one.

hey, Hub, not all the pacemakers will deliver a shock. Your brother probably had trouble with atrial fibrillation, right? If the person doesn't have a history of A-Fib, they will just put in a regular pacemaker. We put in regular pacers all the time. Did a 90 yr old little lady yesterday afternoon. We also do the AICD pacers quite frequently. (Automated Implanted Cardioverter Defibrillator). There are other reasons to do the AICDs, but 99% of the ones we do are for A-Fib. DHs secretary had to have one last month.

Thanks all, as an update they have canceled the pacemaker for today. They gave dad 2 1500mg tablets of Vitamin K and he's been put on 2 new medicines. They plan to try another procedure next Tuesday. He has some heart murmurs and they are going to use a procedure to remove them. He may still end up with a pacemaker, they say his heart is very weak.

Jr, I will be praying for your family. Do you by chance remember what they called the procedure to take care of his murmurs? I know that there are lots of cutting edge things out there that we can't perform here. And I hope that the procedure combined with his new meds will take care of his problems.

I've called them each day. Dad made it to the mailbox and over to the neighbors today. He's having to drink lots of liquids. He seems to be in good spirits. He goes back to the doctor Monday for additional work.

As an update, my dad had more tests on Monday.

His heart is operated at about 30% capacity.

He is scheduled to have the pacemaker operation this Thursday. It will be an AICD type pacemaker, which one of his sister's also has.

They want to do the pacemaker operation first. However that will not be the last surgery, they'll do a second one probably the next week, to remove heart murmurs if all goes well.

im glad he got thru it fine! my mom suffered a pretty bad heart attack a few years back, she only has about 20% of her heart working. just recently she went to heart specialist who recommended she gets one put in. shes getting the type that will shock her heart back into beating correctly if something ever goes wrong. her appt is on dec 4th..we are both optimistic all will go well

That's the kind dad got bk4sky. They are pretty routine these days. I hope your mom does well

Dad sadly is not listening to the doctor as well and was walking the dogs today. (They are not small dogs). Still though mom's a bit mad at him he seemed to be in good spirits. He seemed a bit more alert than he was and he is at home now .
