A cashiers check is basically cash. The funds are verified as available by the bank. I wouldn't worry if it was bought by a local buyer and the check is from a local bank. I would be more leary if the person was from across the country. But to be safe, just tell the person you have to wait for the check to clear after cashing it before you will send the merchandise. That is usually an acceptable practice.

We sold something on Craigslist and the person wants to give us a cashier's check instead of cash...any comments?
Thanks
There has been a rise in counterfieting bank checks and money orders. I would call the bank as soon as you get it. Cash is King, what is the hold up on getting you cash? 'Hub
If I knew it all, would I be here??Hang in there = Retained attorney 8-06, Filed 12-28-07, Discharge 8-13-08, Finally CLOSED 11-3-09, 3-31-10 AP Dismissed, Informed by incompetent lawyer of CLOSED status, October 14, 2010.
If this is a local sale, why would they want to give you a cashiers check? If they can buy the cashiers check at a local bank, they can afford to withdraw the cash instead. If they need a record of the transaction, write them a signed receipt for the merchandise. IF you are selling a big ticket item, like a camper and truck combo for $20,000 I could understand a cash transaction problem - so you would need to go to their local bank with them to verify a check, and then have the bank make out a cashier's check to you at the request of the buying party, while you wait.
If it's not a local transaction, beware - could be a scam.

Why not save them the trouble of getting a cashier check and just have them give you cash? There are way to many scams out there involving these "checks".
Craigslist has a reputation about the same as e-bay, need I say any thing more?
Golden Jubilee was a year-long celebration held every 50 years in which all bondmen were freed, mortgaged lands were restored to the original owners, and land was left fallow: Lev. 25:8-17
How many times have your purchased something and offered to pay via a cashier's check? If you were comfortable about this situation, you would not have posted and asked. When in doubt, don't do. I smell scam a mile away.

I agree with everyone else. I sold a washer and dryer on craigslist. A "woman" offered to buy it for her sister for her wedding/housewarming gift. Next message said she was out of town on business and would have movers pick it up immediately. 3rd message was she would have to get a cashiers check and send it to me. I just replied with ... due to some dishonest people (they ruin it for everyone dont they?) I am accepting cash only. Funny thing is I didn't hear back from "her". All future postings I put at the end "you pick up and cash only". However, every posting I still got at least one message requesting to buy sight unseen with cashiers check or money order.
Thanks for the responses. THe item is $1700. THe buyer gave us his bank, the bank's phone number and the check number so we can check it out before we meet tomorrow. I agree with you all. Next time- Cash only.

Make sure the Bank is an actual bank. Some of these places have set ups that when you call the number provided, it goes to a call service they have set up that is the "bank." Do your homework big time on this one... Google everything about that "bank" and cashier check scams... If you have the parties' names, google them. Unfortunately, this is what today's world has become due to all the scams and fraud out there.

FBI just caught big CC & home quity loan scams. They set up faked banks, faked web sites, and faked/routing tel # so everyone can call in, fax in, & verify their (faked) status too. What are smart hacker geek kids these days!
