Conspiracy theory? No Recovery in Sight?

There are now more than five unemployed workers for every job opening in the United States. The ranks of the poor are growing, welfare rolls are rising and young American men on a broad front are falling into an abyss of joblessness.

Some months ago, the Obama administration and various mainstream economists forecast a peak unemployment rate of roughly 8 percent this year. It has already reached 9.4 percent, and most analysts now expect it to hit 10 percent or higher. The Obama administration has committed a great deal of money to keep the economy from collapsing entirely, but that is not enough to cope with the scope of the jobless crisis.

There were roughly seven million people officially counted as unemployed in November 2007, a month before the recession began. Now there are about 14 million. If you add to these unemployed individuals those who are working part time but would like to work full time, and those who want jobs but have become discouraged and stopped looking, you get an underutilization rate that is truly alarming. The first step in dealing with a crisis is to recognize that it exists. This is not a problem that will evaporate when the gross domestic product finally begins to creep into positive territory.

The article actually isn't in poor taste at all. This news along with the "hidden real-estate inventory" issue will plague us in 2010-2012.

...as much as i would like to "feel" optimistic about a "turn-around", i am increasingly feeling a weight of unease with what is happening. good GOD how did and why did we get into this mess?

we have an entire party that is ONLY playing the blame game or playing the obstructionist role w/o proving ANY SOLUTION of its own... we have a capitalist system that has been allowed to run amok with very few or ineffectual protections from harming the general public, politicians that want to continue doing the same way or no way...YEESH!

The Capitalist system is being dismantled by the day. The currency system is being destroyed. Mrs. has had UC extended five times now, $22 "stimulus" payment with every free money she gets. I do not approve of UC, but when there are no jobs, I'll take the money while is is still worth something. Soon, you will need two rolls of dollar bills to buy one roll of toilet paper.

Pinoy, I shall fight for your right to be a conspiratorial. It was only one persons opinion that you should be shut down as a conspiracy nut. That was addressed and as long as you post by the rules in the right forum without insult or bad language, no Moderator has the right to take your freedom of speech away.

There are also rules for Mod's and "Laz" owns this site and is a fair person.

If you are conspiratorial, I too am. I see the Obama as the last elected president, and the first U.S. dictator.

He in a single sentence (as example) tells the doctors that this suing for malpractice has to stop, but then says of course we aren't going to stop people from being allowed to sue doctors. WTF?

Now Cap and Trade? Not one damned Congressperson has read that law. Now we have 100 honest men in the Senate about to bury our free market next Friday? Give me a break. This is leading to much worse than a depression. It is leading to despotism. Only my opinion. 'Hub

I'm holding out hope the Senate will not pass cap and trade.

Elections are next year. I'd carefully track your Senator's and Representative's votes. If they aren't voting the way you want them to a clear majority of the time, then its time to vote for someone else. I think that is the clearest message we could send even if it completely clears the entire House of Representatives and a third of the Senate (cause only 1/3rd of Senate is elected every 2 years). Don't wait til they start drumming up their campaigns, pay attention now. The votes of the last 6 months are more important probably because they think voters don't pay attention then so they do their crappiest voting then and we should grade them on it.

Thank you for this. There seems to be a broad denial of all the facts in the media and in Washington.

Conspiratorial? Perhaps, but only in the sense that those in power ARE trying to hide the truth while they desperately spin away the hours and days, hoping the problem will somehow fix itself. We have the "American Spirit" after all. Nothing bad can happen here. And if it does, surely it cannot last long.

              BS.

My wife and I were discussing this very thing last night. All of my darkest fears about a world more akin to Mad Max, hopefully without the nuclear desolation, are much closer than I would have ever thought possible. That I take such thoughts seriously is either a sign of imbalance, or a greater realization for me. That more and more people take the idea seriously is a sign of a huge problem on the horizon.

I only hope we have enough real friends willing to stand with my family if/when these events unfold.

                On another Conspiracy topic...

Doesn't the guy pictured (BOB HERBERT) above look like Michael Jackson's doctor? I mean, if this is a conspiracy... that would certainly add some more credibility to the story.

(By the Way, MJ's doctor, Dr. Murrary, was being paid $150K a month... a MONTH... to take care of him. How much was Dick Cheney paying? You see, this is the real healthcare issue folks. )

Been down that road. I have been threatened to be banned and accused of some things here, and not a drop of evidence for it when I asked them to show me.

How do you put together a consumer economy that works when the consumers are out of work?
Simple. Just keep hiring and voting for the democratrepublican party to take away your freedom & rights day by day and turn you into mind slaves. ....OR.... you want 150 dollars for a barrel of oil? then you pay us 150 dollars for a barrel of corn.

Good article. We will overcome this mess but the government (especially this one) is making it worse by rewarding poor business models. The last administration started it and this one is prolonging the pain.

Japan had a lost decade from the same things Washington is doing. Thank goodness we get to vote again for a new congress next year unless you like socialists.

I stopped tracking them last year. As far as I am concerned anyone sitting in office is toast at least as far as I am voting. What about you all, hmmmm?

That's what they count on banca. They know after an election folks are tired of the ordeal and thus not paying attention.

That's when they cowtail to their peers in Congress more than the voters which is what leads us to Stimulus, bail outs of big companies, etc. They figure voters will forget about all those 'bad' votes by the time they come up for reelection and that has held true for decades but now we the American people need to wake up and take charge, clean the House and clean the Senate (Senate will take us 6 years to clean). And by clean I mean completely replace every single person there. Then when the new people take office send them a letter that we are watching and just as their distinguished colleague was just replaced, they to can be replaced, and then outline what we expect them to do.

Then remain active, write letters, keep up on whats going on and keep that meter running. If the new person doesn't vote a majority of the way you want them to, then the next election vote them out.
