CA Unemployment at 11.9%

CCN reported this PM that CA unemployment is now at 11.9%.
That does not count the people whose benefits ran out and they are no longer on the rolls.
We are at 9.6% locally.
The other day a smaller chain hobby and crafts store opened here and they had over 800 applications for 45 positions in the store.

Well 15.6% as of July for Michigan. only 5.9% more than the US average.

They've been keeping that Michigan number quiet. I work in Lansing from time to time and I've seen more lobbyists up there in Capital City, than actual law makers.

Knowing what happened to the auto industry I can believe that easy enough.
Here in AZ as well as CA it was the housing industry that got hit hard.
Not too bad here locally but in the Phoenix metro area many people are out of work due to the housing problems.
My kids and their spouse were all involved in housing and are out of work. I tried to convince them 3 years ago they needed to get out of that industry as I could see what was coming then.
The $ were just too good at the time and they stuck with it. Now 3 of the 4 are out of work like many.

I'm hearing more and more that liberal blue states have higher unemployment numbers then so called red states.

Lately I can't tell a dem or repub apart, but if this is true it wouldn't surprise me knowing dems love job killing higher taxes and expensive social programs more then repubs do.

Mrs. C. went to pick up some dry cleaning we could not bail out for two months. Well, guess what, store dark. No notice. They opened a new store, but never opened the doors.

We had a little left over in our account and thought after her late evening part time library job, she should call a pizza in to a local (not chain) Italian restaurant. When she arrived, no one was there, but the crew and cleaning to close. Not only that, everyone up to the guy washing the floor was thanking her for coming in. "Sign of the time?" Yes. She always saw a bunch of folks there at closing time and this was new.

I am seeing silent death around our town. We are a mill town. If that mill (paper mill) closes, this town is toast.

The Great Depression only had 25% unemployment, but they also had dust bowl. Except for the dust bowl, we have 'Bammy, and I see the arrogance and new taxes that will put the last stake through the heart of our economy, on this horizon. Gosh, it's a 'Brave New World'. 'Hub

Drove by a small strip mall the other day where a new pizza joint is about to open and the parking lot was packed and people were standing in a line to apply for a few jobs.

A local school opened a job for a custodian position paying about $12 per hour and over 1,500 people applied.

Those of us who still have jobs will do well to appreciate our situation.

I don't think the republicans or Obamacrats have an answer to the job situation... The 780 billion dollar stimulus package was basically a social agenda spending bill that didn't address the need for job creation in this country... I know that Obama has promised the "green jobs" that would transform our economy but those can easily outsourced to cheaper labor markets outside the US. I don't see the job market picking up any time soon and most economists are calling for a "jobless" recovery.

You know what... call me old fashioned, but for all his problems, I'd rather have Bill Clinton back. And I'm a conservative with independent thinking. Except for one area of his life, LOL, I don't recall Bill ever lying to the people to get something done.

I will to this day, never ever elect a Senator or Congressman to the high office. They would have had too many year's experience placating to the special interests, lying, and downright manipulating the truth. Now that's pretty much any politician, but I would rather seat a Governor to the Presidency, over any senator, any day. This Presidency just proved my point as to why 3 of the prior 4 Presidents were Governors. And, at least the fourth one, while a member of Congress once, was at least Vice President first.

Why doesn't someone just come on Television, and tell the Americans the truth. It's a jobless recovery. It will be nationwide 12% unemployment before we see the bottom of the employment cycle. That jobs are not coming. That 3-5 million more will be lost.

Joe Biden told us today the stimulus bill is working and we're losing jobs at a slower rate than when Bush was in charge is his justification.

I love politicians who can't take ownership of a problem and only know how to pass the buck. This clown has been involved in policy making for 20 years. You'd think he'd realize he's part of the problem and his involvement didn't start on January 21.

I say we clean house and start over with one new administration, 50 new Senators and 535 new Congresspersons.

Too bad we can't just do that. Sometimes, I like the parliamentary system where you can dissolve the parliament! If only we could combine this.

If only we could have a national election where the People were able to vote the lot of them out, in a single vote of no confidence! That would be spectacular!

Agreed. As far as I am concerned six months into any administration the president owns all of the problems no matter who supposedly caused it. And yes I feel this way even if we elected a president that I actually like. When Obama signed on for the job he took ownership and promised to fix the mess. It wasn't like he didn't know. Now he's the man to fix it or he will be fired after his first term. If he happens to fix this (which I seriously doubt he can) then I will vote for him next time around, maybe.

I agree strongly with this only because dems and repubs always band together in large groups like this is some kind of private club. They all have to follow Congressional leaders or risk losing financial and partisan support.

I just never liked the idea of members of Congress a 1000 miles away from me thinking they represent me. If this is how they want to play then I should be able to vote them out.

I think the rate is more like 20% or higher. I know several people who had small businesses that closed them. they cant collect UI, and i know they are not counted and they are looking for work. One friend of mine made his $1+ million bucks wheh he was 25 and has not worked since 1992, been living off his investments down in florida. well he lost most of his money when everything tanked last year and he is now looking for work.

I work in a business that is tied to air freight, and everything has come to a virtual stop for us. and the big problem is the big air freieght carriers cant put togather any 5 year plans because the market is so uncertain. It's an industry that needs to forcast way in advance so they have equiptment avaliable and ready to service demand.

i live in california in an area that boomed from construction since 2001. there are tracts a big new homes everywhere, and the builders cant unload them. When the do sell one it goes for 1/2 what they sold to other customers, so a lot of people just walk away because now they own a home worth 1/2 what they paid for it.

1/4 of my neighbors are in forclosure. One neighbor had a flooring business. He is in forclosure, i can see him listed on Realtytrac. Over dinner tonight my son said he saw a repo truck taking the guys car late at night a few days ago. it's very ugly here

I always wonder about people like your friends or others that I know that are in the same situation. Not to be judging them but when I hear these stories it kind of surprises me that they were even lucky enough to make big money in the first place.

The math never adds up. I don't think since the 70's could anyone afford to retire on 1 or 2 million comfortably. What that kind of money gives you is the leverage to pick and choose what you want to do with your career since you can hold out longer without taking on any job and maybe retire at 60.

If I had a million It would be spread across several HEALTHY banks and I wouldn't work as hard at my job and I wouldn't need to save money for retirement or fund an emergency which would give me more disposable income to enjoy and then call it quits by 60 to 62 but that's only me.

I hope it works out for your friends.
