It will cost extra to get your plan amended because it requires a court filing fee and the hourly fee for your lawyer's work on the motion. $250 is a pretty typical price for this - our lawyer quoted us the same amount if we needed to file a simple plan amendment.
The way I see it, it's $250 now or take the chances of having your plan dismissed down the road because the payments are too high and eventually you'll fall behind and not be able to make them. Personally I would start finding every way possible to scrape that $250 together. And if you are unhappy with your current lawyer, start interviewing for a new one. If he/she is being paid through the plan, then that payment could be moved to the new lawyer. Unfortunately unless you are lucky to find one that is compassionate for your situation, you are likely going to pay some upfront money again. Won't hurt to go find out what your options are.
