New Unemployment Bill For 99'ers Introduced

    December 20, 2010

Democratic Reps. Barbara Lee (Calif.) and Bobby Scott (Va.) introduced legislation Friday that would provide additional assistance to "99ers" — people who've exhausted 99 weeks of unemployment benefits without finding work.

"The economic downturn has been devastating for all of us — however, it has been particularly devastating for those who for the past two years have been out of work known as the 99ers," said Lee in a statement Friday, after the president signed legislation preserving the 99 weeks for an additional 13 months and tax cuts for the rich for two years.

"While the tax plan that was signed by the President today will provided additional unemployment benefits for many Americans, the 99ers were left out of that bill," Lee said. "That is why it is important that we put in place a safety net for those still looking for work. We cannot and will not allow our fellow Americans to fall by the wayside. Congressman Scott and I plan to continue to push for passage of this legislation because it is simply the right thing to do."

The Lee-Scott bill would add 14 weeks of benefits to the first "tier" of Emergency Unemployment Compensation, one of two programs that together give the unemployed up to 73 weeks of federally-funded benefits for workers who exhaust 26 weeks of state benefits. The full 73 weeks are available in states with unemployment above 8.5 percent.

Rep. Shelley Berkley (D-Nev.) introduced similar legislation in September. She told HuffPost she would advocate for additional weeks of benefits after the existing 99 weeks had been preserved.

The measures are unlikely to become law in the face of Republican opposition to deficit spending, even though several GOP lawmakers have unintentionally voiced support for giving the unemployed additional weeks of benefits.

"We're pleased to see more members of congress concerned about people exhausting all their benefits," said Judy Conti of the National Employment Law Project, which lobbied aggressively for the 13-month reauthorization. "These are the hardest hit victims of the recession and we hope that in the new year Congress will finally take some action to address their plight and work on targeted job creation efforts for them."

    please.....this is just too much....

like i was stating on the other thread...this bill that was just signed needed to get done asap....others will follow...they are going to have to deal with the 99ers whether they want to or not....especially, since more will be hitting that point in the upcoming months.

What happened to Sen. Debbie Stabenow's Americans Want to Work Act? That legislation was for the 99ers and it got tanked last summer.

I remember that bill S.3706. I wrote my senators and congressmen, I hammered this board with that. Then it disappeared faster than a congressman after making a promise to his constituents. I wish that original bill had gone through. I don't understand completely the bargaining/compromising process, when politicians try to get their bills through.

yes, i remember that bill also....but as one poster put a 24 hour article as being obsolete....things on the 99er front will be changing later as more and more people are going to be in that situation....so government is going to have no choice but to deal with it...and hopefully they will either put those people to work...........or extend the EI....one would hope.

Do any of you remember a classic scifi movie Logans Run? It was about a futuristic underground city built after the nuclear world wars. They had a great way of dealing with people over 30. They performed this crazy ritual where they floated them up in bubbles and blew them up (it was supposed to be some type of spiritualistic ceremony).

Is this what are government will eventually do with all of us?

I am hoping this 99er bill kicks in. I am hoping I have a job before this happens as well. Even if I am employed, I will not stop supporting this bill. It is the morally right thing to do for millions of people that can't find jobs that don't exist.

I was thinking we should just give every country's leader some happy green, let them smoke up and then lets see how fast wars end. No alcohol, because that will surely get them fighting, but the green stuff should make them all discuss why the sky is so pretty and blue and the ocean has such nice waves.

Next lets give the senators and congressmen the happy green and ask them if they can pass the 99er unemployment extension act. Then ask them why they vote down such important bills, such as the medical aid to the 911 responders. They will be so happy and spacey, that they won't care, just give them the pen and push the bills through .
