    The ultimate sacrifice

I just wanted to say on this sad yet joyful day... with family and friends, thanks for everything this country has given us, even in difficult times, and for all those heroes that died protecting and defending the freedoms we enjoy today.

We may gripe, but it's not about the politicians and how they screw everything up. We, the people, do still have the power to change things for the better.

God bless those that paid the ultimate sacrifice for us and others and lets honor their memory today. We still live in one of the best countries in the world. It is up to us to keep it that way.

    Pete

I agree we should honor those that have given their lives for us. IMO, we should do this daily.

I was very touched today by something I saw on CNN.com.-- Several weeks ago, a friend and I were walking around our department. We went into the anesthesia office. No one is ever there, but they keep a lot of medical books and a couch to catch a nap when out on call. There are quite a few pictures up, mostly of the anesthestists and friends. There was one of a soldier, obviously out in the field. Since our head nurse anesthestist was a chopper medic in the first Gulf War, we assumed the young man was a close friend, perhaps someone with ties to some of the others for him to be among all these other pictures of friends at weddings, concerts, etc. Today I saw that exact same picure on the CNN wesite. Turns out it was Lt. Michael Murphy, who has been awarded the only Medal of Honor that has been given out for Afghanistan. My friend is like that, to put up a picture of a true hero in the office for all who enter to see.

I extend my thanks to anyone reading this that has served to protect me and my family. Also to their family for making the sacrifices that go along with this.

If anyone is interested in reading some of the Medal of Honor stories, here is the website where they are, not just Lt Murphy, but every person awarded this highest honor.

Nice link arkienurse. I know that most of us that visit this forum are suffering some really bad times. I know that I am

But we have to remember that this is still a great country..with problems, of course. It's really in our hands, if only the general public was educated with a understanding of freedom vs. government.

I am at the lowest point in my life. But I remember those that gave their life to protect the freedoms that come from us...the people...not the government.

Jezz, just read this forums about obscure laws and taxes, and schedules, and the IRS and about how the middle class is being screwed all the time in this process.

I honer those who died this Memorial Day by looking for more freedom....and electing those politicians that represent freedom.

When will he general public, the regular guys, realize we are being screwed by many of our laws?

Even though the Iraq and Afghanistan wars have faded from view more lately, it's still so important to remember our soldiers and their families who are sacrificing what can NEVER be replaced - their time together. And cry for those who in this war and all those before it made the ultimate sacrifice - their lives.

Hubby(Navy) has been deployed there 2 times already. I have some friends that have been there 2 or more times. I know some that have been hurt, lost limbs.

I am proud to say I served my country for 8 yrs and I am proud of all my brothers/sisters in the military still doing what many others would dare to do.

I admire and respect those that wear the uniform in the United States, without them we wouldn't be. Even though I've been sick the last few days I did drive to my grandfather's grave on Memorial Day and made sure he had fresh flowers and a flag (which he did).

I know Memorial day has passed but I just found the thread. Very touching. My cousin was in Iraq and came home safe and sound. Another cousin's daughter is headed over soon. I fly an American flag on my porch all the time and have my porch done in red, white and blue. I had a solider who had served in Iraq come by last summer and thank me for my porch, he actually shook my hand, it touched me deeply. My deepest respect goes to all who have served our country!

I disagree with you that the Iraq and Afghanistan wars "have faded from view". Maybe that's how the media is handling it, but rest assured that the majority of Americans are VERY aware of those wars, justified or not, and salute our soldiers every single day for their duty and sacrifice.

I lost a first kiss/first infatuation/first love/good friend to the Vietnam War. And two others from my high school graduating class came back maimed. Back then we had the draft. The VN War made no sense.

Now we have no draft and we have brave volunteers who go fight our administrations' wars for us when told to do so. I salute them from the bottom of my heart.

But rest assured that our current wars have NOT faded from the American people's memory.

All the best to you and your family.

Soldiers aren't the only military fighting this war. I salute every branch of the Armed Forces. I know how hard it can be.

My son will be headed into the marines on the 16th. I had to give it up to God, I was unnerved and worried. I never dissuaded him, someone has to be there to defend us. he has been in DEP for over one year and has run 3 miles per day for about six months with a book bag. He is working at the recruiting office from 7am until 6pm right now and did 3 PT sessions today. he is at least fit and is gaining the mentality God Bless anyone who serves at any time.
