I lived in AZ for a long time, and I had a garden. I mostly did container gardening and I bought the shade cloth stuff and drapped it over hog fencing that I bent in half to resemble a tent. I could move the covering when I needed too. I had rain water saved from the roof in a barrel, odd to see a house out ther with gutters, but I had them. And Other barrels from grain that I just left open to capture some rain in the monsoons or in Jan or feb. The hunting was the best though, elk meat is darn good.

So, how come our nation does not simply reinvest into itself? I mean they collect the taxes and give the money away to rebuild or attack someplace, or hand out charity. Churches go to Mexico, or someplace to hand out charity with our donations. At what point do we realize that many Americans are suffering and wages have been going down for decades in purchasing power. We need to stop using credit and start making enough to live on, not paying some people enough to live on and supporting other countries. How can we offer charity or rebuilding to others if we are doing that with borrowed money?

I say we nuke the small countries we keep attacking and/or defending. That would take care of things quite well. We owe china so let's nuke them too. I mean seriously why have all the nukes and not use them? Better leave Russia alone though...

Even the subway workers that are taking fewer wall street thugs to work due to high unemployment want a pay raise even though there are less riders.

We are giving money to our leach foreign enemies who want to kill us!

There are more govt checks being written to leaches, foreign or domestic then they are taking in from taxes which means we aren't paying enough in taxes and there is no end in sight.

Their goal is to turn all of us into a leach where we will need to depend on the govt or die without them.

On another note I am not referring to anyone collecting any kind of temporary assistance or Senior citizens, disabled, vets etc.

Once China actually understands what is going on, they will claim their investment. When we renege, WAR. Don't short change China. THEY are the ones building our home computers. WE (thank you Mr. Clinton) have knowledge given to them by U.S., er I mean us.

I would not wish to become subservient to this government. I would rather have had the NAZI's win the war. When the errrrr, how can I say this, the Islamic Radicals take us from within, we are dead meat, or ladies, start to try on seed sacks for practice, and bow to the East, five times a day. In Mexico there are no government handouts. People have to work. The Mexicans are very hard workers because they know they have to work to eat and have shelter. Most of the Mexicans over here work 2 jobs. I saw today on Fox News that unemployment in Puerto Rico is crazy high like 30% or something. But the unemployed people refuse to work for $75.00 a day in the coffee plantations. You know why? They are getting "government cheese". I know people that are over a year on unemployment sitting home playing wii. Why work when the government pays you. Now there is talk of the government buying forclosed homes and renting to the previous owners. When is this going to stop? You would have to be a fool to work overtime or start a business to just give it away to people who are trained to be lazy. Let the churches and extended family be the ones to give charity. If you want to eat you need to get your ass in the church. Gosh this country is pi**ing me off.

Well said! While it's hard for some to figure this out you just explained in 27 words why unemployment is rising and why this recovery is BS.

Everytime one asks "how long will this last?", "when will it end?"

I found it noteworthy that our fearless leader made the trip to China...(for what by the way ? Not much disclosure/transparency...), in my humble opinion the Chinese no longer need to put THEIR butt on a plane to make it over HERE for any discussions....

I firmly believe that the Chinese FULLY UNDERSTAND 'WHAT'S GOING ON' and that we are now only puppets.

I very much doubt that there will be a 'WAR', at least not in the 'old fashion' sense. Yes, there already is a 'WAR' going on within this country, but it does not require the commonly known weapons of wars.

Yes, there are individuals who scam the system on the low end. There are also just as many individuals who scam the system on the high end (think Bernie Madoff). We villify the poor scammers and idolize the high rolling scammers (until they are exposed, at least)....why is that?

I suggest all of you that think poor scammers (code for illegal immigrants and welfare mothers) are the cause of our current economic situation take the time to read just one book - Nickeled and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenreich.

This is the story of an degreed, upper middle class essay writer who went undercover as a low wage worker to find out how non-skilled workers make ends meet. The experiment took place in Florida, Maine, and Minnesota, with the author finding a job, transportation, and lodgings in each location. The experiment was held for four to six months each time, working full time and living only off the amount of money she earned in unskilled jobs (waitressing, for example). The goal was to determine whether or not the author could both live off just the money she earned and still have enough money at the end of the month to pay the rent and living expenses.

Guess what the outcome was? In every city she went to, eventually she couldn't do it. Working a full-time unskilled job, she eventually couldn't make enough money to live on for longer than 3-4 months. And she was living alone with no family. This was in 2002. The situation is even worse now.

Get a grip here, people. The "welfare cadillac" boogeymen you are pointing fingers at make up a small % of our total population. There's something seriously wrong with our US financial system when a person working full-time at a respectable job can't sustain even the most minimal life keeping shelter over their heads and enough food to eat.

Well-designed population studies have proven over and over again for the last several decades that there are MILLIONS more of these very hard-working folks who no matter how hard they work, struggle to make it in our capitalistic "winner take all" financial system. They make up a far larger group in the US than your welfare cheaters.

How do you explain that although these working poor are the largest group by far in our US society, they are invisible in this discussion? They are doing everything you mention as needing to be done - they are working full-time and working hard and long hours to scrape by praying nothing bad happens because they have no cushion, no fall-back help. How do you explain why they can't make it? Is it ok for our government to help this group when they have a shortfall they can't control?

Simple answers rarely take into consideration the many hidden complexities of any situation. This discussion is no exception.

People who write books and do undercover stories have motives to make their case to make the book sell. ie Michael Moore and that dude that did the movie Super Size about McDonalds. Poor people "make it" every day doing jobs, it is just hard for a softy (authors) to "make it" in the real world. If I tried to make it on the streets in a ghetto or in prision undercover to write a book I would have a hard time too and could make a great case that it cannot be done. I am not going to read that book to understand life is hard. And I am not using code to bash welfare moms or illegal workers. I agree some of the biggest crooks in America are on Wall Street and congress and the White House from both parties. The reason Mexico is not prosperous eventhough they have no real welfare state is from corruption. We are every bit as corrupt. People make choices and there are many less "victims" than the media portrays. When the nerd is studying and not going out smoking pot and getting drunk in high school he made a choice and got a better job. Now he has to pay extra because he did the right thing and studied? The progressives want you to think he had some advantage and is now holding out and he must pay for the people (who made poor choices) who just can't make it. And on the other end Bush and Obama and the cronies they associate with are stealing money from China to pay off Wall Street (and also stealing from the tax payers) to give them welfare too. Our constitution does not permit any of this stuff but we have been brain washed to believe it. Just like we have been brain washed to belive there is a separation of church and state.

And I have to add that the situation you describe has been going on since the begining of time. There will always be poor. Giving someone a handout does not fix the problem. Charity is good but it needs to be from a private source, not the government. You can bash the rich but that is the system that allows investment. Do you think lots of poor people are going to pool money to start a business? Let the individual use talents to make a business to employ poor people to make a living. No handouts for the poor or the rich. There would be no bailout of Wall Street if there was no Federal Tax stealing money from us poor workers. Government is not the solution, government is the problem.
