To give hurricanes names.
Fay is now pounding Florida.

I believe it is the National Weather Service. Years ago Hurricanes were just given womens' names because woman were considered so "unpredictable" as are hurricanes. That was changed due to the many obvious protests that occurred over the years and they now alternate, starting with A, from a woman's name to a man's name.

They should start with a mans name & begin with Z instead of A all the time.

Years ago, we had a 'hurricane preparedness drill' in our county, with the mock hurricane being named 'Zack'.

BTW Fay is following a course very close to the 1928 storm that is considered Florida's Great Storm.

Yes. It was August of 92 & I was living there in Broward. It was a 5 and made a beeline for south florida and never went off course. I would not like to go thru one ever again.

LOL! I can easily argue that point by saying I know quite a few Category 5 men who could put anyone to shame with the havoc they leave behind everywhere!
