Vet doesn't know what's going on! :-)

No changes at home - but the cat has never been..."right" - in all seriousness he either has dementia or some other mental issue - again, I am NOT kidding.

we had a few kitties that were just naughty and had some real head issues. however, and even though we had many a kitty, if they were naughty they needed to be placed elsewhere otherwise, it hurt everyone in the house to deal with the mess. now, i know that sounds rather harsh, however, we use to breed cats and show them, so at times we would have 40 at once. and NO i'm NOT the cat lady, this was many years ago. they even had their own lovely house that simulated "spring" all year for breeding purposes.

if one of kitties was not meshing with their behavior it usually resulted from "stress" some were just not cattery kitties, although we provided tons of space it didn't matter.

but i believe you, i just hope he snaps back!

Well, I hope so too...and indeed the person who cleans up the catpoop, pee etc said the cat cannot stay if this continues!

i know it's difficult....and really NOT 40 cats, that included kittens we always bred 3-4 mommys at a time so they could raise each others babies...just in case someone was not a good mommy another mom would just take over in the nursery. it was really sweet to watch.

is he still eating well???

He was always a HUGE eater - and he's not pooping more just not in the catbox...

A sudden behavior change is normally the result of a medical condition. It could also be chemical imbalance. Some older age some animals just resort back to various stages of their life. It is similar to a human going through Alzheimer's.

My guess though with his age it is not a mental issue, but it sounds like renal failure. In which it would mean he could not control his actions. Can you put plastic or pads down where he is going? If the vet found nothing I would start questioning them. If they did any blood work I would ask to see the results. The blood work should give you a range for each section tested. The problem is he will not just magically stop doing this. I hope you can find a solution to what is going on.

Thanks so much exployer!!! would renal faliure explain the pooping everywhere? I'm far more inclined to the mental issue...

The reality - the unfortunate reality is that if it is renal faliure...I really only have one option. I'm due to hear back from vet tomorrow.

Sorry if I missed it, but did you mention how old the cat is? I know you said he was ten when you got him, but how long have you had it?

'hats, that is a good question - we've had him for about six years - when we adopted him the adoption place said he was about 1 or 2 years old...HOWEVER, the cat had been "returned" twice by the time we got him...vet thinks he's at least 11/12/13 or so.

Poor little guy. The howling adds to the urinary tract infection theory. My kitty howled when he had a UTI. That and the trails of urine drops all over the house brought it to our attention quickly enough to get him treated before it got too serious. But, I would think that would be easy for the vet to diagnose and the pooping doesn't really fit. Maybe he isn't making it to the litter box because he doesn't feel well. Or, as already suggested, he connects the litter box to the pain that occurs when he tries to urinate.

I hope the vet has some answers for you soon!
