The stay at home moms of the special needs children, my daughter seems depressed most of the time. In the 7yrs that the children have been on this earth, I would swear that at least 6yrs of it she has been depressed. Most of this is due to the fact that she does not have a thick enough skin when dealing with the world and how they look at special needs children. She feels that she should react in an angry manner whenever there are stares or comments about the special needs children in public. I have tried everything I can think of to get her to understand that you can not get mad at ignorance. There are many who know nothing about special needs(some of them work right in the police department with me and I am the grandmother) but no matter what I say, she is still upset all the time that people will not accept her special needs children without stares and comments.

You have to put peolpe in their place nicely sometimes but that is only after explaining it and they are still ignorant. But I have just learned being depressed only hurts my kids more. The kids dont understand sarcasim or think that they are any different so if it dont bother the kids I cant let them see it bothers me.
Sometimes life make you deal with ugly and hateful people ,just think of them as sand paper. They may scratch you and rub you the wrong way but eventually you end up smooth and polished and the sand paper becomes old and worn out.

Currently, I am an Executive Assistant to the Senior Credit Officer in the Commercial Division of a bank. I have been in the financial field for over 30 years. I started out as a bank teller, (the hardest job of all.) Before my current position, I worked at Citibank Student Loan Corporation for many years.

I'm so sorry to hear that. Developing that "thick skin" isn't always easy. Has your daughter seen a therapist? Or would she be willing too? It may help her to talk with someone about her feelings and to help develop some ways to cope with having children with special needs. Depending on your grandkids age/s she may even be able to get some free counseling through the Birth to Three (or Early Intervention) program.

I can't say I will ever get used to the stares or comments but I try not to let it get to me. My oldest is severely autistic so it's usually obvious to people that "something" is going on. Most people have been understanding.

I'm the Lead Pharmacy Technician/Inventory Specialist for a local pharmacy owned by a big pharmacy chain. In other words, the big fish in a tiny little itty bitty pond. This job is new to me, and it's just starting to show promise of become something I can depend on to support myself in the future.

Glad to know that there is another law enforcement person on this forum. At first I felt like and odd ball. I guess people do not realize that law enforcement people working everyday like all the rest have credit difficulties too.
