Anyone else watching REVOLUTION?

We started watching it last week; while not as good as LOST - it may have potential if they keep it more on the "real life" side. While some of it could be seen as "real life" - I wish they hadn't gone all "lord of the rings" with all the swords vs. guns in a 15 year timespan. How the entire US would be stripped of guns in that period seems absurd but.... it is a tv show afterall.

The premise is that its a world wide eletro-magnetic pulse caused by someone rather than some natural occurrence.

We started watching last week as well. The show has an interesting premise and it will be interesting to watch it develop. They need to keep the 'flashbacks' to a minimum, though. Too many makes it difficult to follow what is going on in the 'present day'. I think that too many 'flashbacks' and 'flashforwards' helped to derail 'The EVENT' several years ago.

i was a bit confused about why all the cars stopped working but then as the genius sitting next to me, explained that the magnetic force would have effected the electrical systems of all the cars. i taped the 2nd show and haven't watched it yet. i'm just a bit concerned about watching it, because i LOVED hero's and then it poooooffffff gone!!!

I like the show so far but I find it funny when one guy with a sword kills 5 or 6 other guys.

Glad I'm not the only one who's annoyed by the "flashbacks / forwards" - hated when LOST did that towards the end of the series. Hopefully they'll keep them to a minimum - this old brain cant keep up

Well - if this ever does happen, guess we'd better sharpen up on our sword skills eh? Think I'll start practicing with my machete HA HA HA!

I have watched it. It looks like interesting. But, then I like fictional stories like this.

Where did everyone get all those swords? Guns are everywhere in this country. There is no way that some militia could round up millions of guns and just declare them illegal. Several of the guns that do appear in the show seem to be muskets. Are muskets that common? Would it be easier to find blacksmiths for swords and gunpowder for muskets 15 years into the future? And who is training all these blacksmiths to make all these swords?

How does everyone have fresh haircuts and nice clothing still? The guys have fresh shaves and the women have makeup. No one seems to be starving or have rotting teeth.

Then there is all the tech plotholes. The woman in the farmhouse uses an amulet to power a lightbulb and some type of homemade computer hooked up to a new flatscreen. And she uses DOS to talk to someone else who must have another magic amulet on their end. She uses a dial-up modem so the telephone lines must all be intact between her and whoever she is talking to on the other end.

I like the premise of the show and I want it to be good but it is just so silly. We are not going to turn into swashbuckling models if we lost power for 15 years. And why is there no steam power or windmills or anything like that? This manmade EMP strike has made steam useless? So much bad writing.

i agree with the "silly" part, but we have to keep reminding ourselves this is just pretend ok...it's not real, we don't need to figure out so many whys.....right?

An adjunct to this series, and a very good and easy read is; "One Second After". A very believable (at this time) fictional story about an EMP bomb.

For those who don't understand: EMP is Electro Magnetic Pulse weapon. We do have them. As in lightning strikes, most damage is NOT done by the lightning itself. If you have ever had a TV or the like that failed after a lightning strike hit close, have been a victim of EMP. A spark that big pulsed magnetism across many wires. When a magnetic field moves across a wire, it induces an electric field many times far above the current you are using. This "spike" can cause electronics to fail, even if not turned on. Most modern electronics are not truly off in their "off" position. They are in a low power situation, not off.

In modern automobile engines everything is controlled by sensors and a small computer. A large enough magnetic field could pulse across the wiring in a car and head for this computer. It only takes about 20 volts or less to blow a circuit board. A 40 volt spike will certainly fry a computer.

You cannot "feel" or hear magnetism, but it is all around us. If you put an AM radio next to your computer, you will hear the "magnetism" emitted by the normal working of the circuitry.

The movie series has definite flaws but the story is real in concept. The electronics in most military items is "Hardened". That means covered over with much metal grounded to the earth to protect the entry of a high magnetic pulse.

Figure being without electricity for just three days. Here in FL by three days the store shelves are empty during our hurricanes. Unlike years ago, there is no weeks worth of stored foods in grocery stores. They are replenished by the day. 'Hub

Was good, however I do believe some of it was a bit much.... like 2 months after the EMP the entire world went to crappola - and people were acting like cavemen

Pandora, I find it very believable. For instance, check out how much food you have (if you are not a prepper). Probably about a weeks worth. Then imagine no way to get to your store except to walk. Figure there is no meat as power is out, if the store is open at all. Then, if you are on the street with money, how many are also there with no money. Three months is not too unreasonable for total anarchy. Check out Katrina. Don't rely on government at all.

I actually read the book three times. En route to my brothers I go by Ashville so I went to those mentioned towns in the book. Remarkably accurate as the book described. Living here in FL we pack some long term foods away. We live on the river so water is not a problem. Also have a flowing well (terrible water). We home can but storing is a problem. We lost several quarts due to failing seal. Going to check them all today. Another good book is an old one. Alas Babylon by Pat Frank. 'Hub

As to the part of it being a bit much and the entire world going to crappola? You can bet your sweet cheeks that it would happen. A mass that is filled with panic is a very dangerous thing indeed.

"A NOVA special that covers the basics, the seccond half addresses the subject more directly. The danger seems to be not only to the grid, granted the last time (which only affected the most northern lattitudes) It was confined to the grid and plugged in stuff. The mass coronal ejection event that hit in the 1800s (1859?) seems to have set some of the telegraph offices on fire.
In 1989 the event that hit Quebecc Canada it took two or three minutes to black out about 6 million people. But that seems to be the extent of the damage. However the 1859 event was in two waves. And they believe the storm to have been a much bigger event then the 1989 event. Telegraph stations were the only things at the time that could be effected. The batterys on at least one office were heated enough to start a fire and almost burn down the office.

So it is not just if we are going to hit by an event that will effect the grid it is when.
The question is how big it will be and when."

My personal belief is that it will be of a limited scope, and it will be regional. It won't affect the whole world, and probably not even the whole country, nor even all the lower 48 states. People will have to move to a different part of the country temporarily, and that mass exodus of people will cause the most deaths. Just think of millions of people all walking from say Phoenix to Los Angeles all at one time. It would be chaos and the mass panic would be the deadliest part of it.

But my guess is that it will never happen in my lifetime. I'm not going to worry about it.

ya misunderstood me dearest - I do believe the book was pretty accurate as to how the general public would react - what I dont believe is that in a matter of 2 months life as we know it would consist of how they describe it in the book. While it would eventually happen, in time - they have the worst case scenarios w/in weeks to 2 months. I think we as humans could survive a bit longer than 2 months - even without "modern day conveniences" or grocery stores. I know for us, we will be fine for quite a while just in what we have here - but I do know that my mom / hubby's mom would be SOL. they live towards the city - and...given we are in the country, we're better off in the long run. thank god we have a constant source of fresh water here should SHTF.

@ Hub - I agree, which is why we too stock pile items of necessity. Not so much for this type of scenario, but for ANY scenario where we could be w/out power, etc for a time. being prepared for anything is the main goal Medical supplies, water, food...and of course...Toilet paper LOL are all necessity in this house. We actually just found an awesome supplier of food grade mylar (commercial grade..not flimsy type) bags and are dehydrating our own foods for storage - as well as just to keep staples around when they go on sale (flour, sugar, etc).

FWIW - how many of you that are on well water - actually have a hand pump should your power fail? *raises hand* Something one needs to think about when on well water since the pump needs electric.
