Back in 1859 there were very few electrical devices. As you mentioned about the telegraph - some of the wires had their insulation burn off and some telegraphs had sparks etc. flying from the devices.

As for using knives, guns don't work if you don't have ammo. A box of ammo would not last very long.

ya misunderstood me dearest - I do believe the book was pretty accurate as to how the general public would react - what I dont believe is that in a matter of 2 months life as we know it would consist of how they describe it in the book. While it would eventually happen, in time - they have the worst case scenarios w/in weeks to 2 months. I think we as humans could survive a bit longer than 2 months

Ahh my dear, while I believe that you and I can survive (as well as 'hub and others), the masses would self destruct within a matter of time that would be less than 2 months, so we will agree that the situation is not realistic.

I tend to think that Haydes in a handbasket would come within less than one week in the cities and with citizens that are not in the same mindset that we possess.

Actually, so far the swords have looked a lot like machetes to me. We have three here; one in my car, one in the house and another in the garage.

In fifteen years, people--those who survived, would have relearned the old skills from others who survived. Every community that has horses--and so far there have been plenty of horses, is going to have blacksmiths to produce horseshoes, along with the hubs for wagon wheels and other such items.

As far as society degrading, in 2004 when we had the four hurricanes crisscross across the state, we were without power for three weeks. We were prepared and did fine. But after three days, we were hearing reports--on our battery and wind-up radios--that people were losing patience about having no power, and in some cases, they turned rather 'ugly'. We are in a small, rural area.

@my little green buddy: I see your point re: Katrina - I think that's when we started to really look at "what if" scenarios in our own household. I cannot stress enough the importance of having basic necessities on hand for at a minimum of a few months in every household, going upwards of a year if possible. I think you may be a bit more prepared than we are as far as long term.

@ AC & Hub - machete's - yep thats what it looked like to me also. We have those here - now using them on the other hand...is another story. We always use the chain saw / brush cutter.... guess we'll have to work on using them more, just in case LOL

What a great discussion this has become . A "survivalist" thread almost, so with that in mind, here's my thoughts:

I think everyone should:

- learn morse code (ok..quit laughing at me LOL) - overkill? Perhaps, but...you never know what situation you'll be in, especially if you're an "outdoorsy" type like we are.

- ER care pack: We always carry some sort of ER packwith us whenever we go hiking or camping; first aid kit, small mirror, foil blankets, etc. It's also good to have in your vehicle some sort of kit, especially entering into winter months: change of clothes, shoes, blankets, water, protein bars, hand warmers (the kind that react to air). I guess being married to a hunter / country boy for 23 years has taught me to be prepared in any situation Gotta love those country boys!

- learn self defense: even basic moves may save your life.

- learn to cook from scratch

- learn to garden & "put up" the harvest

I have several homeopathic books, however unless you're REALLY experienced in plants, its very easy to confuse many plants that look identical to the layman, but can kill you. This is one area I'm still trying to wrap my head around but its so damn confusing. We have plants here on our little farm that I had sent off to our state labs to identify (free of charge) because I wasnt sure what they were. We have several berry bushes that have been on the property for over 150 years so we wanted to ID them. Turns out they are low country blueberries, huckleberries and elderberries *whew!*.

They made it appear that Miles was a bit off his rocker at first - but then when you see WHY he did what he did to those guys, it makes perfect sense (in my world).

Thoughts on what made him leave as head of the militia?

If a natural or man made disaster should befall us, I would say we are 'screwed'.

Trying to find food to live upon might be a task but try cooking the food without fire and without a burning source is something most if none of us can comprehend.

One of the best things my parents ever did for me was sending me to karate classes when I was a kid. It has kept me out of some very dangerous situations that could have gone very wrong for me, had I not been able to defend myself. In general, when a would-be assailant realizes that you are willing and able to defend yourself, they move on to easier targets.

I had a question about this EMP thing.

Let's say one of your relatives had an old station wagon from the 1960s still in great working condition. If they took out the battery, would it be safe from any EMP?

My thinking is that it could then be used for an escape vehicle after the EMP.

The battery would have to be shielded in a lead container to keep it safe and ready to use after the EMP.

And maybe cover the car's engine with a sheet of lead? Or some other metal that would shield it from the EMP?

i'm sooooooooo trying to watch this. i have two on dvr now and i just am having such a hard time making it through the writing??? i mean the concept is ok, but a few times i just wanted to jump into one the scenes and take care of the situation myself! I was not happy that Maggie appeared to die at the end of last night's episode. I say 'appears' because I have seen other shows and movies later on that have a 'reveal' that negates something that appears to be so earlier on.

And why did Rachel go to the militia? What's going on there?

I have to say that the actors all appear believable in their parts, in that all are slim and 'toned'. One of my criticisms of the Hunger Games, as that the actors, especially the one playing Katniss, all appeared a little too well-fed for a population that is having to illegally hunt in order to supplement meager rations.

I'll bet those lead aprons that dentist make us wear when they X-Ray our teeth might be able to protect some electronic items from an EMP.

I wonder where the average person could get some of those?
