Not in my opinion.
If the small amount of savings is going to make or break you, you really shouldn't be buying anything at all.
I have become very frugal since I started using nothing but cash, and unless I really, really need something, I just don't buy it.
As for christmas gifts, I have stopped giving them to anyone but the children in my extended family, and all I get them is an Amazon gift card, and I figure they can get whatever they want with that. It makes the holidays a lot less stressful. I can just take it easy and take in the sights, sounds, smells, and tastes of the season without getting exhausted by it.
