I'm trying to figure out what I'm missing here.

We are almost 3 months post-filing. 1 month post-341. No discharge yet.

Several accounts were closed immediately. Some still survive.

We have access to creditwise through our Capital One bank accounts. As of today, my husband's score is 684, and mine is 699. They've been in this range... after a short dip when we were missing payments.

My husband still has 2 store cards open, and one MasterCard. I have one store card, and 3 major credit cards still open. One of them was included in our bk -- the others all had zero balances. I've been pretty curious about why the Visa was not closed... considering we filed on them and left them out to dry. Anyway...

Today I see a letter in the mail from our Target MasterCard. I think to myself, "they finally caught on -- this is the letter saying they've closed our account". NOPE. This is the letter saying they have raised our credit limit from the $1000 I requested them to lower it to, years ago. Our limit is now $2500, so ~ "spend away!" is basically what the letter says.

    Are you kidding me?!

What am I missing? Will they close these cards after discharge?

You will find that some accounts will survive bankruptcy, especially the ones with $0 balance. You may also find that, when you go to use them, the creditor will close the account at that moment. Tread lightly, but this is not outside the scope of expectations. My Jared's account remained open and reporting a high credit limit. It was closed the moment I asked for a credit limit increase (I was doing it to test to see if the account really survived). Right after I asked for that increase, I received a letter that it was being closed and then my credit bureau was updated to show it as closed by credit grantor. I should have never touched it because it was a $10K line that would have looked nice in my profile. Ce la vie.

Hmmm. Thanks, jb. I had no intention of even having any cards left ~ and the thought of using them again makes me feel sick. The fact that they are RAISING our limit again already... wow. I don't get it.

"We see you haven't carried a balance on this $1000 card for some time... so how about we give you $2500? Will that work for you?" I mean, what in the world...........

If/when we do decide to test the waters, I'll be attempting to make an online purchase, for sure. No thanks on the embarrassment at the checkout somewhere! o_o

Ha, I've never seen anything like that! Like you said... nor do I want to.

I'm not sure how to feel about this Target MC. On one hand, it's nice to know it might be there for "emergencies"........ on the other hand, I've been fully prepared to live without credit. Period.

I really thought the letter that came today was them FINALLY closing the account. Which I felt zero feelings about. Opening that envelope was a non-event, just like all of the other non-events.

But I have feelings about them raising our limit up to $2500...... it makes me feel gross inside. It makes me feel like their prey.

Isn't it interesting how our perspectives change..... I remember feeling so proud of our good credit. Being able to walk in pretty much anywhere and get approved for whatever, whenever. I really thought a lot of myself and how I was handling our finances when these companies were "trusting us" with credit lines near $20,000. Ha! How times have changed.

Only my Kohl's card survived my filing (it had a zero balance). I have used it twice since getting my discharge for a couple small purchases under $40 as they sent me some 30% off coupons, a $10 birthday coupon, $10 off women's wear special, etc. If they catch on and close the card, eh, oh well, it wouldn't be a shock.

I did not check my credit score until post-discharge. I am at 605-610.

Kohl's is one of our store cards still hanging around, also. We used it quite a bit for the discounts, but always paid it off when the bill came. I never carried a balance on store cards unless it was a 0% financing promotion or something.

JC Penney is the one still left in my husband's name... He's had it forever (and ever) ~ but we used that thing MAYBE once a year. ...Maybe.

My JC Penny was showing open on my credit report so I logged into it online and it says 0 credit limit and that it is closed so I'm not sure why the disconnect. My daughter needs clothes bad I bought some and even after washing too big so hard to gauge that sometimes. Learning to live on what I make is truly a lesson and I feel very poor. I guess I always was. Now it's time to act and dress like it lol.

Hey, good to hear from you ~ although sorry to hear about your clothes dilemma. Hope things are going well (besides being poor).

I'm really not feeling great about having the card and the raised credit limit, because I'm so afraid of getting back in the same mess as before. We're trying to learn to live within our means, too.

I 100 % agree it is going to take some time to adjust. Stuff just come up and that is def how I got here. It's tuff. I should be receiving notice of discharge any day now. You must be close behind. I can't wait!

I had 2 cards survive BK. I used them very sparingly right after discharge (bought gas for car), and I never had any issues. Been 4 years now and still good.

It's not common, but it does happen that $0 balance cards survive.
Chapter 7, above median, no asset. Discharged with no UST involvement.

Just a quick update to say that our Kohl's card remains open after discharge. I have used it two times online with no problem. We've had that account with them for 17+ years and never paid late. Of course they were not included in bk, either. Store cards were always paid in full when the bill came, due to insane interest. I am going to let part of the balance revolve this time, for the supposed good thing this does for your credit. Although our scores are still decent. Both in the 685 range right now.
